FEBRUARY 1, 2011] – The Big Push for Midwives <a href="http://www.thebigpushformidwives.org/pushstates" target="_blank">PushStates</a> network is in a good position to help women who, because of the national snowstorm, will give birth in place. Using the agility of its Yahoo group, and PushStates e-lists, the Big Push can help stranded families, including those who planned a hospital birth but now find themselves at home or in a shelter somewhere. <table class="MsoNormalTable" style="width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse;" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="100%"> <tbody> <tr> <td style="padding-right: 11.25pt; padding-left: 3pt; padding-bottom: 3pt; width: 86.25pt; padding-top: 3pt;" width="115" valign="top">    </td> <td style="padding: 3pt;" valign="top"> NATIONAL SNOW EMERGENCY: MIDWIVES ARE STEPPING UP TO HELP. <ul type="disc"> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; line-height: 140%;">While a complete formal contact directory of midwives across the United States does not exist, The Big Push is using its proven networks to help connect midwives trained in out-of-hospital birth with mothers whose babies may need to be born in out-of-hospital settings during this natural disaster. </li> </ul> <ul type="disc"> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; line-height: 140%;">On February 1, 2011 the Campaign called its networks to action, and the community mapping efforts began, to provide visibility on counties in the affected blizzard states where out-of-hospital midwifery care is available. </li> </ul> <ul type="disc"> <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; line-height: 140%;">The Big Push has reached out to the Red Cross, FEMA, the 211 Resource System, and other disaster specialists to coordinate with live call centers that are on the ground to try to get trained midwives to the moms who need to give birth in place – whether in shelters, community centers, schools, or their own homes. Contact information can be exchanged and midwives can assess how/if they can go help the mom and baby in need.
